Religion in America. First Edition 1965

The purpose of the present volume is to recount the story of American religious life in an attempt to make some sense of it for the benefit of the reader. First, the author's major concern was not to chronicle the life of individual religious groups. The purpose has been to depict the religious life of the American people in interaction wih other dimensions of their experience, and to depict the unity American religous life exhibits as well as particularities. Second, an attempt has been made to maintain proper balance in the attention devoted to the several spochs in the story of religion in America.
