This book is a history of these three dimensions- adjustability, continuity, and unity - as they developed in one American city, Balitmore MD. It is the saga of a group which began with no political rights whatsoever but became sufficiently integrated to have one of its memebers attain the office of governor of the state. It is the history of poor foreigners whose descendants became captains of commerce and industry and luminaries in the academic world. This book is an account of a group in its struggles for acceptance and for maintaining its own identity.
