Lutheran education's unique task is to "hallow God's name" by teaching the Word of God clearly and purely. Inasmuch as the controversy within The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod has to do with nothing less than "the Word of God," the very nature of Lutheran education is at stake in the dispute. The author proposes that the controversy and its pain is a purifying fire sent by the Lord himself, and a sign of His love. Out of concern for His holy name, the Lord is determined to magnify His authentic gold, and to separate out from it an accumulation of dross. "After the purifying, Lutheran education will glorify god for what He has revealed and done, and be the more eager and able to hallow His name.
